Story of KANGAROO PAWS
The Kangaroo Paw is another wonderful part of my Ancestors stories in their living days in both Tasmania (Palawa) and Victoria (Bunurong). They had Kangaroo Paws in their gardens at the side of the house, to attract birds, using it in their cooking or keeping it close in their homes in a vase. We often collected and carried with us parts of the garden. It gives us a sense of safety and connection to Country while providing a positive memories.
While I was painting the first in the series, I remembered vividly the first time I discovered Kangaroo Paw in my parents’ garden. It captured me with their shape and lively colours, especially the fuzziness of the stem. Uncovering all the memories from the experiences while painting Native Plants and Flowers is very special for me.
