About N’Dene Riley

My name is N’Dene Riley and I am an Aboriginal artist and storyteller. I would like to acknowledge and pay my respects to my mob and to the Elders, past and present, who have walked before me. Everything I create is grounded in Country, guided by culture, and carried forward with pride and care.

My art is a way of carrying forward culture, memory and connection to Country. Every piece I create is guided by the stories that have been shared with me and the feelings I carry when I walk on Country. Painting is not just something I do, it is how I speak and share who I am.

Over the years I have painted for all kinds of people and places. I’ve had stalls at art and craft markets, community events and Aboriginal markets, meeting people who want to connect with culture through art. It is always special when someone chooses one of my works to take home, or asks me to create something personal just for them. Commissions let me walk alongside others in their story, whether it’s a painting for their family, their business, or a gift.

I’ve also taken my art into schools and community spaces. Teaching has become an important part of my journey. I enjoy working with early learning, primary and high school students, showing them how art can tell a story, connect them to land, and help them see themselves in new ways. I’ve run community workshops too, bringing people together to paint and yarn, and to create pieces that stay in those spaces as reminders of culture and connection.

Looking ahead, I want to keep growing my art and my reach. I see myself painting larger works, murals that stand strong in public spaces and tell stories that everyone can share. I want to take my workshops further, across Victoria and beyond, so more communities and schools can experience culture in a hands-on way. My dream is to balance making art for myself, for Country, and for others, always keeping culture at the centre.
